There is number of solutions proposed by different inventors, individuals and institutions for low cost disposal of human waste to overcome the health hazards that can be caused by open air defecation and can be considered appropriate under the given local conditions and limitations of available finances, materials, skilled labor, water etc.

‘EverClean® Shankar Septic Tank Latrine’ is the best solution among all available ones, developed after extensive research and was adopted by large numbers of people in India. Director General, Council of Scientific Industrial Research, (CSIR) New Delhi, directed Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee to study the design of “EverClean® Septic Tank Latrine” and to compare its performance with other alternatives. CBRI studied the designs & its performance in Oct, 1995 and found it suitable for every soil conditions.

The tests on the samples of effluent were conducted at University of Roorkee under the guidance of Dr. Arvind Kumar, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, and the results are included. The septic tank consists of two specially designed readymade chambers of different diameter and length. One of the readymade chamber is bigger in length, while its diameter depends on the number of the proposed users. It serves the purpose of primary tank. The other readymade chamber may be half or the same length and diameter also changes with the number of purposed uses. It works as subsidiary tank.

EverClean® Septic Tank completely eliminates problem of cleaning the tank at intervals. The method was tested by government laboratory (CBRI - Roorkee). Not costly if compared with traditional septic tanks. It does not pollute ground water, hence healthy for environment. Maintenance free, simple and easy in adoption. It takes very little space & less consumption of cement and bricks. Minimal chances of damage during earth quake. Latrine can be built even on the tank itself in case of want of space. The effluent of this system is discharged into the open drain.

The tests indicated that EverClean® Septic Tank is much more efficient than the conventional septic tank in reduction of BOD, COD, Total solids, Suspended solids and Volatile solids the effluent from the tank, When mixed with the rest of house hold effluent from kitchen & bathroom shall reasonably be fit to be directly discharged into a open drain, as far as the parameters of BOD, COD, Total Solids, Suspended solids, Volatile solids and PH is concerned. It is highly recommended that this system can be adopted for large conversion of dry/ service latrines into EverClean® Shankar Septic Tank latrine in the areas where proper drainage system is not available.
